NEET UG 2024: SC rules out cancellation and retest; accepts IIT-Delhi report on Physics question | Education News

[ad_1]

The Supreme Court Tuesday concluded the hearing on the NEET UG matters, saying no re-test. Cancelling the exam and allowing the re-test will disrupt the medical education schedule, CJI said. “The Court realises that directing a fresh NEET UG for the present year would be replete with serious consequences which will be for over 24 lakh students who appeared in NEET… and cause disruption of admission schedule, cascading effects on the course of medical education,” CJI Chandrachud said.

While the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) today confirmed before the Supreme Court that the paper leak in the NEET-UG case had occurred in Hazaribagh centre, senior advocate Narender Hooda argued that “since the mobile phones have still not been recovered, we cannot say that the leak did not take place beyond Patna and Hazaribagh.”

The Bench today received the IIT Delhi report led by director Prof Banerjee and it says option 4 is the correct answer. Considering the IIT Delhi report and the statements made by NTA, Centre and petitioners, CJI said: “We accept IIT Delhi report and accordingly NTA shall re-tally the NEET UG result on the basis that option 4.”

The bench comprising Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra started hearing National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test, Undergraduate (NEET UG) 2024 related petitions on June 8, and has since then continued to hear petitions from students, NTA and other stakeholders in three different sessions, the final one being today.

NEET UG 2024 gained spotlight when the National Testing Agency (NTA) announced results 10 days in advance on June 4 — the same day as the Lok Sabha election results. The inflated number of top ranks, allegations of paper leak and other irregularities led to several petitions in the Supreme Court and different High Courts, which were all combined and heard on June 8, June 18 and on June 22.

Festive offer

Supreme Court on July 18 directed the NTA to publish the results of all NEET-UG candidates by Saturday 12 pm on their website — city-wise and centre-wise, masking the identity of the aspirants.

Earlier, a retest was announced by the NTA in a Supreme Court hearing, for 1563 candidates who were originally awarded grace marks due to loss of exam time. The retest was conducted in the same six affected cities, but in different exam centres. The 1563 candidates were told their original ‘pre grace marks’ score and were given a choice to reappear for the exam. As per senior NTA officials, at least 52 per cent — 813 out of 1,563 candidates — appeared for the retest. The remaining candidates will be given their original scores now.
