Nine killed as torrential rain continues in Gujarat | Ahmedabad News

Nine people were killed and hundreds shifted to safety on Wednesday, as torrential rain continued to lash various parts of Gujarat.

According to a statement issued by the government, while three persons died at Devbhumi Dwarka, two each died at Banaskantha and Kutch and one each at Rajkot and Surat. The deaths occurred due to lighting strike and flooding, it added.

Till 6 pm on Wednesday, Gujarat has received 461.22 mm of rainfall, which is 52.33 per cent of the total average rainfall it receives in the season. Kutch has received maximum rainfall at 75.50 mm, followed by Saurashtra (73.36%), south Gujarat (62.04%), east and central Gujarat (31.38%) and north Gujarat (31.38%).

In all, 74 talukas of the state have received more than 500 mm of rainfall, the government said. It added that this monsoon, 4,238 people have been relocated and 535 rescued from seven districts.

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, while reviewing the situation in the weekly Cabinet meeting, instructed ministers to visit affected districts and guide the district administration in relief and rescue operations.

The government further said that electricity has been restored in 5,796 of the 5,817 affected villages. Among the roads affected by the rain, 30 have been made operational for traffic and this includes two state highways, 23 panchayat roads and five other roads.

For rescue and relief operations, 13 teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and 20 of State Disaster Response Force have been deployed in the state. Two NDRF teams have been kept on standby, the government said.

Quoting government spokesperson and senior Minister Rushikesh Patel, the statement said that the Sardar Sarovar dam currently has 1,82,444 mcft (million cubic feet) of water, which is 54.61 per cent of its total storage. The other 206 dams of the state have 2,36,849 mcft of water, which is 42.28 per cent of their total capacity.

Moreover, 46 dams are full, the government said, adding that while 51 dams are on high alert, eight dams are on alert and warning have been issued in regard to the 12 others.
