Moderate rain on the cards for Mumbai starting next week: IMD | Mumbai News

After clocking in over 2,000mm rainfall since the onset of monsoon, the city is in for moderate showers in the upcoming days, predicted the India Meteorological Department (IMD). While the weather bureau has sounded a yellow alert for Mumbai and Thane on Sunday, no warnings have been issued in the metropolis starting Monday.

Despite a yellow alert in place in the district, the city has been witnessing light rain with the IMD’s Colaba station receiving 5mm while Santacruz observatory recorded ‘trace’ rainfall between Friday and Saturday morning. In meteorology, trace denotes that while the amount of downpour was greater than zero, the proportions were too little to be registered by standard units of measurement.

Meanwhile, the BMC’s automatic weather station data showed that the island city division and eastern suburbs received an average 3mm rain while the western suburbs merely registered 2mm.

According to weather experts, the district is slated to receive intermittent spells of moderate showers over the next two to three days at least.

“Earlier, the low pressure area (LPA) was ushering in the westerlies and bringing heavy rain to the west coast.

However, now the LPA will travel towards the north, north west direction taking away the heavy downpour from the western coast and bringing showers in Madhya Pradesh and nearby areas. Therefore, for now, Mumbai is likely to receive light to moderate showers for the next two to three days at least,” Mahesh Palawat from Skymet Weather Services told The Indian Express.

“For later, we will have to watch if another LPA develops and brings rainfall to the city. It must be noted that there is already another LPA developing. However, its direction is towards the north which is unlikely to impact this region,” added Palawat.

So far, the Santacruz observatory has registered 2,004mm rain, of which it received 1,657mm rain in July. Owing to this, the city is currently witnessing a surplus over 50 per cent from its actual average quota of July rainfall which stands at 855mm. Meanwhile, the Colaba observatory has logged in 1,371mm rain in July alone, making it the island city’s wettest July in a decade.

However, in light of the receding intensity in the city, the IMD stated Mumbai is likely to witness only moderate showers from Monday to Wednesday at least. For Sunday, meanwhile, the weather department has placed the city under a yellow warning owing to the possibility of heavy rainfall in isolated pockets.

Amid subdued showers, the lake levels saw a marginal spike over the past 24 hours with the water stock in the seven lakes catering to Mumbai’s water demands soaring to 71.95 per cent (10.41 lakh million litres) on Saturday morning.

On the same day last year, the water stock remained at 61.58 per cent while in 2022, the lake levels jumped to 88 per cent of the total capacity. When 100 per cent full, the seven lakes have a collective live storage capacity of 14.47 lakh million litres.

Meanwhile, data furnished by the BMC shows that the city recorded 20 incidents of tree collapses, partial house collapses and short circuits between Friday and Saturday morning. Of these, maximum were tree collapse cases (12), followed by four incidents of short circuits and wall/house collapses each. Civic officials said no casualties were reported in any of the incidents.
