In a bid to put the drivers’ focus on speed limit so as to stem road accident deaths, the Karnataka Police from August 1 will book any driver who exceeds the speed limit of 130 km/hr in any of the roads in the state.

Alok Kumar, Additional Director General of Police, Training, Traffic and Road Safety, said that 90 per cent of the fatal accidents reported in Karnataka are caused by speeding vehicles. Karnataka stands only next to Chandigarh in most number of road accident deaths in the country, according to police data.

“From August 1, FIR will be registered for vehicles driving above 130 kmph anywhere in Karnataka, for rash and dangerous driving,” he said.

Citing the data of July 25, the police officer said that 155 motorists drove at a speed more than 130 kmph on Bengaluru-Mysuru Highway.

While many hailed the move, some netizens asked whether it was applicable for the minister’s convoy. Reacting to it on X, Alok Kumar said, “One year back Hon’ble CM travelled to Mandya for inspection of our ANPR  cameras. I was part of the convoy,  Hon’ble CM @siddaramaiah ensured that the convoy does not cross 100 Kmph speed. Hon’ble CM was briefed in advance regarding the speed limit. Officers should brief in advance.”

Festive offer

During April 2023 and March 2024, Karnataka witnessed 43,780 road accidents that claimed 11,611 lives and injured 51,207, said a police data that was recently presented before Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

Of them, 63 per cent of the accidents took place on 14 national highways and 114 state highways.
