Filmmakers Raj and DK have created Citadel: Honey Bunny, the Indian version of Russo Brothers’ Citadel, starring Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra in the lead roles. At the teaser launch event of the show in Mumbai, the duo discussed how Russo Brothers were involved in the project and how they maintained their independent voice all through the collaboration.
Raj said, “This is the first time we are doing a collaboration with anybody. We have been fiercely independent filmmakers. The three of us started from 99 and are here. So, we have only made what we wrote, what we direct, what we produce. We write, direct and produce most of our stuff. That’s what we believe in doing. We can’t do something someone forces us to do. That’s the freedom we enjoy as filmmakers and we are glad we stuck to that.”
Opening up about their first meeting with Anthony Russo and Joseph Russo of the Russo Brothers, Raj said, “We were very excited when we were offered to direct Citadel India. We met Russo Brothers in the US. It was like a big conference, where we had episodes laid out and they actually did their reading. They were very gracious and extremely collaborative and free.”

Revealing how they had a fresh perspective on Citadel, Raj shared that the Russo Brothers were quite accepting of their idea.
“When we told our idea, it was different from what they were doing. In our pitch, there was a bit more cinema, there are cinematic elements throughout. I thought they would stick to what they had in mind but they were very cool with our idea. They asked us to stick to our vision. When we finished the reading, we were texting each other: ‘There are so many great minds sitting here together.’ And at the end of it, we said, ‘Actually we are also not so bad.’ Also, we have only 10% of their resources,” he shared.

DK of Raj and DK added that he was stunned seeing the equipment Russo Brothers used to make Citadel. He said, “We saw the gadgets and everything. We were like thank god we set ours in a a different era. Our gadgets are not going to be as fancy as theirs are in the future. When you see the rest of the show and the trailer, you’ll understand.”
Citadel: Honey Bunny is an action series starring Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Varun Dhawan. The web show will drop on Amazon Prime Video on November 7.
