The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has issued notices to 648 flat owners in Surat’s Limbayat zone, asking them to vacate their houses, as the buildings “are in a poor condition”. The notices were issued Wednesday and Thursday and flat owners have been given seven days to respond.
These 648 units were built in 2009 on the Surat Municipal Corporation land under the Town Planning scheme in Limbayat’s Kamrunagar area.
According to one of the notices issued by SMC, “cracks have been found on the walls, columns and beams in the building” while at many places the “rusted iron rods are visible”, which shows that the “condition of the property is not feasible for stay”. “The building requires repair work or redevelopment,” said the notice. After the unit owners get the building repaired, they should get a structural engineer from SMC to survey the repairs, following which the engineer will submit a report to the civic body, based on which the unit will be SMC certified, said the SMC notice.
In case the unit owners fail to comply with the notice, the municipal corporation officials will “forcefully evict them from their houses” and “demolition will be carried out, expenses to which will be borne by the unit owners,” said the SMC notice.
Limbayat Zone Deputy Municipal Commissioner N H Patel told The Indian Express, “We surveyed all the buildings and units in Kamrunagar area and found that many of them are not feasible for people to stay. So, we issued notices to the unit owners.”
“The buildings are ground plus three floors. There is also leakage in the drainage systems in the buildings which has resulted in such poor conditions. We have found that around 40 per cent of the people staying in these units are tenants, and we have told the unit owners to get them vacated,” Patel said.
