The Manipur Government Saturday suspended the police officer who assaulted a local TV journalist covering a rally brought out by internally displaced persons in Imphal on August 1.
The Imphal East district SP suspended the police officer, identified as sub-inspector Sh Nikhil Singh, till further orders.
As per the order, Nikhil Singh is prohibited from leaving the headquarters without obtaining prior permission during his suspension period, and he will be entitled to subsistence allowances admissible under the rules.
Following the assault on the journalist, M Rameschandra, a journalist delegation had submitted a memorandum at the Chief Minister’s bungalow demanding action against the erring police officer within 48 hours. The All Manipur Working Journalist Union (AMWJU) and Editor’s Guild Manipur had also threatened to boycott government-related news if it failed to take action against the sub-inspector.
During the August 1 rally, 10 protestors were also hurt in police action.
